Stone Dominoes 2 Cheadle Town Reserves 0

SCSL Division One

Stone Dominoes kept in touch at the top of the league thanks to a second half brace from Ash Thompson at the weekend against struggling Cheadle.

Joint-manager Kyle Adams was relieved with the victory despite his side not being at their best. “We’re under no illusions that we’ve been poor today but we managed to grind out the win and take the points which is the main thing at this stage of the season,” he said. “The pleasing thing was the clean sheet and the fact that we kept plugging away for that goal we desperately needed.”

Dominoes were without the injured Ryan Mayer and Mark James but Jake Hughes returned to the squad. The home side nearly went ahead in the 8th minute when Endon Adams raced through on the right hand side but goalkeeper James Tanner was out quickly to save well.

Keeylin Thomas fired just over from long range moments later before Jake Alcock came close to giving the visitors the lead but his shot was palmed away by Dan Marsh from 15 yards out. Tanner again denied Endon Adams when he raced through on goal in the 12th minute and Cheadle captain Dave Cartlidge came to the rescue two minutes later as he diverted a Jules Paterson cross over from underneath his own crossbar.

Matt Cockfield took aim from 25 yards on the half hour mark but saw his effort fly just past Marsh’s upright before Paterson was denied at the near post by Tanner in the final moments of a goalless first period. Jake Hughes replaced Paterson early in the second half before Dominoes were forced into a further change when Lewis Adams was taken off through injury; Chris Nellis his replacement.

After few chances of note during the half the deadlock was broken with 20 minutes remaining when Tom Broadhurst picked out Thompson behind the Cheadle defence for the forward to slide the ball underneath Tanner into the net. The visitors pushed forward in an attempt to salvage something from the game late on but were unable to create any clear cut chances.

As the hosts ran down the clock and the game headed into stoppage time Thompson wriggled free along the byline before smashing the ball underneath Tanner at the near post to put the game beyond doubt. The victory keeps Dominoes within one point of leaders Penkridge but that lead may be extended this Saturday when Adams and Ryder’s men are not in action.
