Stone Rugby Club celebrated another successful season coming to an end in style with a sizzling ‘Bring Your Own’ BBQ, with hopes high for the next season.
Newly elected treasurer Charlie Laidlaw started the night by stoking the BBQ and ensured that preparations were ready for the well-deserved celebrations. As more guests, (players, family members, children and pets alike!) arrived it was decided that football was simply the only option, however, as more beers were consumed and those playing got slightly merrier, it descended further into ‘Aussie Rules’ football, and eventually a glory-game of rugby.
Many well deserved recipients were rewarded for their tireless efforts throughout the season. ‘Player’s player’ was awarded to Vice-Captain, John Bekalo, and ‘Clubman of the Year’ going to newly elected Secretary, Ruth Millington. The award for ‘Old Sod’ went to Gary Cunningham, who had won the award more than 5 years earlier, and is still an active player for the team. “I can’t believe it’s been five years since the last one and I end up winning again!”, he remarked.
There’s not much time to recover from the celebratory shenanigans though, as thoughts move towards the new season with an ‘Old Boys’ match being played on Saturday 2 September. The popular event is likely to draw many players, past and present.
