Parents Reminded to Park Responsibly Outside Schools

Stone parents are being urged to put safety first by parking responsibly during drop-off and pick-up times as children return for a new school year.

Any vehicle observed parked on yellow lines or in a restricted area could be issued with a penalty notice, if not observed picking up or dropping off a passenger. The Staffordshire County Council campaign is calling on people to park considerately and reminding drivers that civil enforcement officers will be visiting roads near schools right across the county.

Another object of the campaign is to remind drivers to switch off their engines when parked up, which helps to reduce pollution, is good for the environment and is less harmful for people’s health.

Helen Fisher, Cabinet Support Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council, said: “Drop off and pick up times outside schools can be a particularly busy time and we would always ask parents to park responsibly and be considerate to other drivers, children and their parents when parking.

“We’re asking people to park up correctly in off-street parking spaces or the nearby car parks and switch their engines off. Good parking not only helps to keep our roads clear but turning off your engine also means less pollution which is good for the environment and our health.

“While most people do park responsibly, I want to remind those drivers who park on yellow lines or in restricted or pedestrianised areas that it can be really dangerous for other drivers and pedestrians. Plus you can get a fine for doing it.”

It is hoped that the campaign will also urge parents to consider alternative modes of transport such as walking, cycling, scooting ‘park and stride’ or a walking bus.  These all help to reduce congestion at busy times, are good for parents’ pockets, and help keep people active.
