Wolstanton United 3 Stone Dominoes 2
SCSL Premier Division
Saturday 7th October 2017
A second half fightback was not enough to prevent Stone Dominoes from falling to defeat at early pacesetters Wolstanton.
Luke Humphries, Shane Williamson and Chris Broad had handed the hosts a comfortable half time lead before Dominoes rallied after the break with goals from Jordan Condliffe and Adam Bradley but to no avail. Dominoes welcomed back Chris Nellis, Jordan Condliffe and Marcus Thorp for the trip but were without Dylan Bromley (illness), Ash Thompson (suspension), Endon Adams (injury) and Jon Hancock (injury).
The home side came close to an early breakthrough after just 2 minutes when captain Chris Broad struck the crossbar from the edge of the area before the ball ricocheted back off goalkeeper Adam Johnson and away from a corner. An early goal did come in the 4th minute however when a corner was allowed to bounce inside the Stone six yard box with Humphries on hand to steer the ball into the roof of the net at the far post.
The visitors came within inches of an equaliser in the 15th minute when some good work from Chris Nellis on the right resulted in Adam Bradley sliding in to meet the cross, only to be denied on the goal-line by goalkeeper Doug Hughes. Williamson doubled the lead in the 18th minute when a half cleared cross fell kindly to the midfielder on the edge of the box and he placed his shot into the top corner past Johnson.
The lead was increased further just before half time after poor Dominoes defending allowed a long ball to reach Broad, who cut inside and bent a shot out of the reach of Johnson into the far bottom corner. The away side reduced the deficit early in the second half when some good individual work from Condliffe saw him race through on goal from the halfway line and finish calmly past Hughes into the bottom corner.
Condliffe almost doubled his tally with 20 minutes remaining when he cut in from the left and curled an effort towards the bottom corner but Hughes got down quickly to tip the ball round the post. Dominoes set up an exciting final 10 minutes when they pulled another goal back as Mitch Armstrong headed a Lee Foyle corner towards goal with Bradley on hand to make sure the ball crossed the line heading it into the back of the net.
Despite their best efforts in the closing stages Stone were unable to find the all important third goal as the home side stood firm late on to secure all 3 points. Dominoes take a break from league action on Saturday as they travel to Knypersley Victoria in the Staffordshire FA Vase.
