Knypersley Victoria 2 Stone Dominoes 1
Staffs FA Vase
Saturday 14th October 2017
A late Sean Mountford goal ended Stone Dominoes’ participation in the Senior Vase for another year in a less than enthralling affair on Saturday afternoon. Jules Paterson had levelled for Dominoes 10 minutes from time after Tom Roper had put the hosts ahead midway through the second period, before Mountford drilled a free-kick under the wall with 5 minutes remaining.
Dominoes welcomed back Nasser Mansour but were without Dylan Bromley (illness), Ash Thompson (suspension), Jon Hancock (injury), Endon Adams (injury), Chris Nellis (work) and Adam Bradley (work).
Roper came close to breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute when he curled an effort towards goal but Adam Johnson reacted well to palm the shot round the post. Mountford tried his luck from long range on the half hour mark but his shot whistled wide of Johnson’s upright before Vics goalkeeper Joe Gibson was called into action to turn a fierce Lee Foyle effort round his post from 18 yards.
Johnson was on hand again to deny the home side in the 40th minute when he spectacularly sprung to his right to tip Sam Faulkner’s shot wide in a brighter moment of a relatively quiet first half. The visitors were within inches of going ahead just before the hour mark when Foyle lifted a ball towards the far post but Knypersley players blocked 3 goal-bound efforts from Dominoes players before Gibson finally clung onto the ball on the goal-line.
The home side went ahead in the 72nd minute when Johnson could only palm a cross from the right side back into the path of Roper who drilled the ball home from close range. Dominoes began to threaten more and got their reward in the 80th minute as substitute Jake Regan superbly released Paterson who kept his nerve to slide the ball underneath Gibson for the equaliser.
It was Mountford who had the final say however as he took advantage of the away side conceding a free kick 20 yards out by cleverly driving his shot underneath a jumping Dominoes wall past Johnson and into the bottom corner to send his side into the next round. Dominoes have chance to get back to winning ways quickly when they return to league action on Wednesday with a trip to Alsager Town Reserves in a 7.30pm kick off.
