Illegal taxis targeted in Stone sting operation

Taxi Operation

A crackdown on taxis operating illegally in Stone town centre has landed 12 drivers in court.

On Saturday 7th October 2017 a joint sting operation was carried out by Stafford local policing team and licensing officers from Stafford Borough Council. The operation targeted taxis that may have been illegally plying for hire in the Granville Square area of Stone. This area is the main taxi drop off and pick up point for the town and sees large numbers of potential customers looking to get home after a night out.

The operation came on the back of numerous complaints from members of the public and other taxi drivers who are legitimately licensed to operate in the borough. There have been claims of the illegal taxis blocking the roads to through traffic as well as members of the public being charged extortionate amounts for relatively short journeys.

During the operation, 12 taxi drivers were seen to pick up fares they were not entitled to. They were interviewed under caution, reported for the offences and face court appearances in the coming weeks.
