Five die following M6 lorry and car accident

Chief constableA 60 year old HGV driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following an accident on the M6 this morning.

At around 4:30 this morning a lorry was in collision with a Nissan Micra on the southbound stretch of the M6 between junctions 15 and 14.

The 60-year-old male driver, from the West Midlands, has been taken into custody for questioning.

Of the Nissan Micra occupants four females, and a male, all believed to be adults, died in the car.

Work is ongoing to trace the next of kin and to provide formal identification of the deceased.

A sixth person was taken to hospital and his condition is described as serious, but stable.

As a result of the collision the motorway remained closed for most of the morning with local diversions are in place.

A detailed investigation into the incident has begun.

Witnesses are asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident 68 of May 24.
