Match Report: Walsall Phoenix vs Stone Dominoes

MATCH REPORT- By Daz Knapton

SCSL Premier Division
Saturday 31st March, 2018. 14:30 KO.

If you fancied an afternoon of exciting Staffs County Senior League football, the Stick and Wicket in Aldridge was the place to be as Stone Dominoes won a seven-goal classic against Walsall Phoenix.

Even from the off, the action was thick and fast between the two sides and as Phoenix ran forward on goal Dan Marsh came out and conceded an early penalty, which was converted by Adam Shorto.

A fairly poor start for the visitors and with both sides making plenty of early fouls the game seemed to struggle to settle down, a theme which continued into the middle of the half when Dominoes won a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the Phoenix box.

Ash Thompson took the kick and equalised for Dominoes to open his bountiful account for the day, which he doubled ten minutes later when his side was awarded a penalty of their own in the 33rd minute after some impressive attacking build-up play.

Phoenix would go into the break with the one goal deficit inflicted by Thompson’s double, but there was far more to come in the second-half and in a similar start to the first Phoenix’s Shorto was backfiring again and he doubled his own tally for the day with an equaliser for the home side.

Stone Dominoes hold the unwanted record as the lowest scoring side in the Premier Division this season but based on today’s efforts that were hard to understand. With Adam Catalano forcing a top-drawer save from the Phoenix keeper off of an acrobatic volley, Dominoes started to dominate and despite a long-spell of the ball bobbling and flapping around the Phoenix goal-line, the ball somehow stayed out.

Time ticked on in the game and as we entered the final 15 minutes it would fall to Thompson to complete his hat-trick with a 25-yard strike which flew into the bottom corner before he added his and Dominoes’ fourth in the 89th minute with another penalty kick after being upended. Phoenix grabbed another one for themselves in stoppage time as substitute winger Henry Pratt took advantage of a miscued clearance attempt from the visitors, and at last the full-time whistle blew to end the game.

Final Score – Walsall Phoenix 3 Stone Dominoes 4

Stone Dominoes now sit in 13th place and will hope for a midweek victory on Wednesday night as they face Walsall Phoenix again in what promises to be another great game.
