SCSL Premier Division
Saturday 7th April, 2018. 14:30 KO.
After two wins last week Dominoes welcomed the league leaders from Wolstanton to Wellbeing Park. Goals from Dave Ashley (2) and Matt Rogalski may have sealed the points for the visitors, but it was not easy for United and Edwin Parry’s goal was just one positive for Dominoes to look back at.
The game started in a frustrating way for the hosts as Jamie Kempson took on an early run into the box for United, before passing the ball into Ashley’s path to allow him a simple finish inside the first two minutes.
So far only Redgate Clayton has managed to defeat Wolstanton on their charge towards the league title and Dominoes were being shown early on why this was the case.
At the other end, Dominoes were struggling to show the same attacking intent that had seen them score eight from two games, with Brandon Rock and Ash Thompson both trying long-range drives around the 20-minute mark before Nick Glover hit the first strike on target for Dominoes from 30-yards out.
Despite the home side making brief efforts to get back into the game, Wolstanton remained dominant and with the corners coming thick and fast, the main aim for the Dominoes was to make it to the break just one goal down. This wasn’t to be the case though and in first-half stoppage time Matt Rogalski made his journey up the wing from left-back and after turning his way into the box he unleashed a hearty strike which passed Dan Marsh and made it 0-2 at the break.
In the reverse fixture back in October, Dominoes found themselves behind at the break and looking out of contention, but a spirited fightback meant that they ended the game with a respectful 2-3 loss. No doubt the half-time team talk would have reminded them of this as it looked to be a different side that came out for the second-half. Just three minutes had passed when Glover lofted over a pass towards Edwin Parry and after it evaded the judgement of Isaac Springett Bannister in the United goal, Parry was able to continue his run and slot home.
The first-half bout had been fought mainly from inside the Dominoes third as Wolstanton continuously attacked, but the opposite could be said for the second 45 as the side placed 12th in the table before kick-off continued to outplay a very good football side.
Wolstanton made changes to their tactics too and credit must be given to Ashley as he took the chance to see the game off with his second goal, Wolstanton’s third, in injury time.
After second-place Foley lost, that result now sees them go eight points clear. For the Dominoes, their next game will be next Saturday with a tough match expected against Cheadle Town, who won 10-1 this weekend.
