The tradition of turning on the Christmas lights in Stone 6 weeks before Christmas drew staggering crowds last night
Young and old, resident and visitor….last night the town was a sea of people and bobble hats as everyone wrapped up warm and came out in numbers!
Whereas other towns may pay to rope in a former pop star or reality TV “celebrity”, Stone once again focussed on celebrating local people and local talent.
From 5 O’clock Stone High Street was transformed into a carnival with fairground rides, craft stalls, game stalls and food vans. Many of the High Street shops had already dressed their windows for Christmas, and we heard many positive comments on how the town and shops looked, as well as what a great event it was.
Samantha Lloyd took the reigns as compere for the evening and did a great job of entertaining the crowds with her dialogue and signing. Young local musician Dominique Simone took a slot on the stage before the ever popular Stone Combined Choir switched things festivally up with classic Christmas songs that had everyone singing along.
The lights themselves were turned on at 7 pm by school children who’d won a Christmas Card design contest, the Stone Mayor and Father Christmas himself!
Well done to everyone involved in the preparation and performances on the night, you should all be rightly proud of yourselves.
