What’s the best farm shop in and around Stone?

For the past week, A Little Bit of Stone held a poll on our Facebook page, with Brown & Green at the Trentham Estate, Aston Marina and Amerton Farm going head to head.

There was a clear winner in the vote, with Brown & Green polling 20 votes ahead of Aston Marina on seven and Amerton Farm on six.

The poll was just for fun. We’re pretty spoiled really to have three quality farm shops right on our doorstep.

But what’s your favourite and why? Is there one we missed out?

    What I dont understand with “farm shops” and “farmers markets” is why goods are much more expensive than the High Street shops. Even allowing for the increased production costs, surely selling direct to the public and cutting out the middlemen, should be more cost effective, the savings to be passed on the the end purchaser. Oh I forgot, unlike Continental Europe, where this system exists Brits have this perverse inverted snobbery that if you pay more for something it must be better, even better if it has a bit of soil on it.

    If you look at the aging population of British farmers you can see that many yonger ones are leaving the industry due to economic pressures put on them by the larger supermarkets. There have been lots of dairy famers go out of buisness or started farming tourists now as the money was not in the job. The prices you see in farmshops and farmers market is a reflection of the true cost of production and believe me when you work out all the hard work which goes into producing your food it is not expensive.
