A hundred students from Walton Priory Middle School are taking on a challenge this May that’s as big-hearted as it is ambitious.
They’re swapping screens for self-powered movement in a month-long mission to complete 100 miles each – and they’re doing it in all sorts of creative ways. Whether it’s walking, rollerblading, swimming, kayaking, scooting or running, the only rule is it must be done under their own steam and using at least three different methods.
Why they’re moving
The aim is to raise funds for two causes close to the school’s heart.
Donations will support:
- A ‘Vein Finder’ at UHNM’s children’s ward – a device that helps doctors locate veins in tiny babies and children for lifesaving treatment
- A sensory ‘Cubbie’ room at the hospital to support young patients with learning difficulties or behavioural needs who find hospitals distressing
The children also want to transform their school’s outdoor learning space. Right now, the forest school area is in such poor condition that only one year group can use it. With a bit of love – and fundraising – they’re hoping to restore it for everyone to enjoy again.
Community backing and early success
After just a few days, the total has already climbed past £1,700, and the children are showing no signs of slowing down.
“We’re aiming to beat last year’s total of £7,500,” said one organiser. “The kids are a true inspiration. They’ve thrown themselves into this with real energy and heart.”
Firefighters from Stone Fire Station will be joining in too, heading to the school to run a mile or two alongside the pupils to cheer them on.
A challenge for a cause
It’s not just the students taking part. Walton Priory’s headteacher, six teachers and one school governor have all signed up for the challenge as well, showing just how committed the whole school is to making a difference.
This year’s group is the biggest yet, with 100 pupils taking part. Each one is aiming to complete 100 miles during May using three different types of movement, totalling an impressive 10,000 miles between them.
How to help
Donations are being collected through JustGiving, with all funds going towards hospital equipment and the forest school renovation. Every contribution helps the team get one step closer to their target and shows them their efforts are being recognised.
