Staffordshire’s road network is in line for a welcome boost, with nearly £16 million in government funding secured to support highway maintenance across the county.

The money, from the government’s Local Transport Grant, will be used to improve safety, carry out essential repairs, and help keep the county moving.

Where the money will go

The funding will support a mix of essential repairs and longer-term improvements, including:

  • £5 million for pothole repairs and patching work
  • £3.2 million for major road maintenance projects
  • Nearly £3 million for preventative schemes like surface dressing
  • £1.2 million to support work on bridges, including finishing maintenance on Branston Bridge and scoping a new structure
  • Around £1 million for pavement improvements
  • Just under £1 million for drainage repairs and upgrades

Keeping Staffordshire moving

Darryl Eyers, Director for Economy, Infrastructure and Skills at Staffordshire County Council, said the investment would help extend the life of local roads.

“This one-off additional funding will help us build on the extra investment made by the county council into road maintenance. It means that we can continue to fix more roads, deal with drainage issues, and extend our preventative maintenance programme, which is essential to prolonging the life of the county’s roads,” he said.

The council also confirmed that alongside tackling potholes and worn-out pavements, the funding will support its environmental goals.

“In addition to improving road conditions, the investment will support the council’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and achieving a net zero transport system,” Mr Eyers added.

Long-term benefits

This latest round of funding comes at a time when road quality is a top concern for many residents. By addressing immediate issues and investing in preventative maintenance, the council aims to keep travel safer and more reliable while reducing the need for future costly repairs.
