Mobile mast bid for Christchurch Way

Vodafone and O2 want to build a new mast in Stone on Christchurch Way.

The mobile phone giants have applied to Stafford Borough Council to build a 10m-high mast with six antannae, close to First Steps Day Nursery on the High Street. The location is opposite Christ Church, just to the east of 9 Radford Road.

Nursery manager  Christine Payne said: “We back on to the proposed site. We object most strongly to the proposal as we have lots of young children who play outside twice a day and there may be health implications.”

A number of other Stone residents have objected to the planning application on the borough council’s website.

The size of the proposed mobile phone mast

The mast falls within the Stone Conservation Area and the borough council’s senior conservation officer is adamant that it would be harmful. Penny McKnight said: “Due to its height, bulk and design, the proposed mast would have a harmful impact on the character and appearance of this part of the conservation area.”

Members of Stone Town Council also object “very strongly on health and environmental grounds”.

A design statement submitted by the applicants to Stafford Borough Council said “electromagnetic field” exposure levels would be fully within UK and EU guideline recommendations.

It added: “The mast will offer improved services to the local community, creating better connections that will have social and economic benefits for the area.”
