The trustees of Stone Common Plot are looking for a new resident Plotkeeper to look after the cattle, manage the land and keep fencing and footpaths in good condition.
The position of resident Plotkeeper is essentially a voluntary one but, in recognition of the need for the Plotkeeper to be on site, a house is provided free of rent and Council Tax. The Plot House is on Old Road. Current Plotkeeper Adrian Page is retiring after 12 years in the position and the trustees are looking to find a replacement as soon as possible.
Stone Common Plot, which is owned by a charitable trust, comprises 20 hectares of summer grazing, let out to local farmers, a hay meadow and woodland. It lies at the north end of the town and is a popular area for walking, relaxing and – when the snow falls – sledging! It’s one of the most beautiful spots in the town.
The Plotkeeper is required to supervise the cattle and to manage the land, fencing, footpaths etc to maintain the grazing and for the benefit of public access and conservation. The land is open to the public and the maintenance of its recreational value is a highly significant aspect of the position. All work is carried out under the supervision and assistance of the elected trustees of the charity.
For further information, potential applicants are invited to get in touch with the Chairman of the Trustees, Dr PG Hamilton, by emailing pghamilton@tiscali.co.uk or by writing to Dr Hamilton at Beech House, 37 Station Road, Stone ST15 8ER
If you know someone who may be interested but they’re not online – please let them know!

Hi I hope this goes to Dr PG Hamilton.I recently applied for permission to metal detect stone common i was turned down for reasons unknown to me fine,But I would like to say on behalf of all detectorists that some of us are responsible people we do not dig holes and leave them we fill them in, Most 4 legged animals dig holes and leave them don’t they, that’s 1 thing I wanted to say,2nd thing is on the common we know there is stuff from the past still or maybe still there on the land, Wouldn’t it be in everyone’s interest for us to dig it up for everyone to see and understand our past ,most people say we are just after making money out of our hobby,The truth is not many of us are that lucky most stuff is claimed by the crown or museums, But who makes money of it then Not the guy who found it.3rd thing is we buy hour own equipment we get no help of anyone and we put our own time and effort into it,So if we do find something that gives us some money what’s wrong with that, most of us give up what we find The Thanks most guy’s get is kicked off the land for the archaeologists to take over and take all the credit.I think it’s time for land owners farmers heritage and councillors and us to talk .most of the stuff left in the ground me be lost for ever if we don’t work together and land owners stop being petty and let us do what we do and stop saying no to us , If any detectorists are disrespectful then fine kick them off put them on a not trusted list for all land owners to see many thanks kevin Austin ..thanks for reading
