Manor Hill celebrates diamond anniversary

For the past year, pupils, staff and parents have been celebrating Manor Hill Primary School’s diamond anniversary – ending with a special leavers’ assembly last Friday (19th July).

Led by the headteacher, Mrs. Gillman, the assembly recognised and celebrated the school’s 60 years of achievements and traditions developed by past heads Miss. Riley, Mr. Sutton, Mr. McKenzie and Mrs. Francis.

Under the leadership of Mrs. Gillman, staff at the school worked hard to raise the teaching and learning standards over the previous year across the whole school.

As a result, the latest surprise OFSTED inspection in September rated the school as “good”.

During the school’s 60th anniversary, pupils have taken part in extracurricular activities ranging from family cooking, pennies for Help for Heros and even raising funds by doing their own Gangnam Style dance!

A little bit of history

Built to accommodate Stone’s growing population at the time, Manor Hill first opened in the autumn of 1952.

Stone’s population rose considerably during the war, as families moved to the town and surrounding areas to contribute to the war effort, after which, many remained following.

Many of us can now call Stone our home thanks to the brave efforts of our grandparents at ROF Swynnerton and other local military bases.

It was for this reason that local residents and parents decided to organise last month’s ‘Picnic in the Park’ and raise money for the Munition Workers’ Memorial fund.

The Final Day

The leavers’ assembly started with Year 4 pupils presenting a £375 cheque to the representatives of the Munition Workers’ Memorial fund, Stoke MP Rob Flello and Lloyd Brown.

MP Rob Flello and Lloyd Brown, along with others, are campaigning to have a permanent memorial placed at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas.

The final year assembly also marked the outstanding service and dedication made by the school governors.

In particular, Mike Shaw and George Beecham, who have given 80 years’ service between them to the Manor Hill Community. They witnessed many changes at the school, including Manor Hill formally joining with Walton Priory Middle School at the start of the new term in the Stone Community Federation.

This is a very exciting time for both schools. Staff are confident they will see further improvement and development in continuing to work together for the local community.
