Stone joinery and furniture specialists Cedar and Rose are opening the doors to their brand new showroom with an open day on Saturday 19th March.

If you’re currently thinking about home design projects, popping in will be well worth your time. You’ll be able to have a closer look at their bespoke furniture, take a sneak peek inside the modern workshop and chat to their experienced craftsmen about how they can help you.

And there’ll be lots of tea and coffee and homemade cake!

Most furniture and cabinetry is manufactured in huge factories, often imported from the EU and Asia, and all meticulously processed at the touch of a button. Cedar and Rose owner David Giles offers something more hand-crafted.

Cedar and Rose operates a small workshop, with skilled craftsmen, employing a mixture of hand techniques and modern machinery to produce products they are proud to put their name on – quite literally…

David says that Cedar and Rose are “cabinet makers first and foremost” and specialise in cabinetry and furniture for kitchens, bedrooms, home offices and more. From initial concept to being able to translate this information into a drawing and specification, Cedar and Rose can tailor any of the above areas from supply only, to full management of every aspect of a project.

Whether a customer’s request is for freestanding individual furniture, built-in wardrobes, fully custom kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, there is a possibility for everyone.
David is proud to be following in his father’s footsteps. Keith Giles’s old business sign has been restored and will take pride of place in David’s office at the new unit.

“I owe my father everything,” David says. “I served my apprenticeship with him and learned so, so much. I’m continuing the skills and craft that he taught me. My father served his honoree apprenticeship at the renowned Peaches joinery company in Stafford in the late 60s and early 70s. After serving his due, he set about working for himself and set up his carpentry business. It wasn’t long before he ended up having to carry out more and more aspects of the projects, until eventually, he was a general contractor.

“Fast forward 35 years and not only had he built up a successful business, he’d also trained my elder brother and myself in the craft of joinery and carpentry. We both served as apprentices at Stafford College and gained our Level 3 NVQs.

“Although there were the occasional falling out between father and sons, one thing that was always consistent was the end product. My father drilled into both of us the importance of quality, product selection and customer relations. At the time these were often tedious and contentious moments. Now, with hindsight, I thank him for taking the time.”

It was David’s father who encouraged him to set up his own company to provide all the carpentry and joinery elements for the clients. This meant that any outsourcing could be kept to a minimum.

So Cedar and Rose was born.

Unfortunately, David’s father suffered health problems about eight years ago which left him unable to work. David took over and completed all the projects which were outstanding at the time, and then took a moment to review the situation and plan the future.

He decided to scale back Cedar and Rose operations and go to university, where he got a first-class degree in quantity surveying.

“I always knew that I wanted to concentrate on joinery and cabinet making, but I wanted to broaden my knowledge of the whole industry I wanted to make my way in,” David says.

After graduating in 2014, David’s full focus has been on building Cedar and Rose into a business he and his father would both be proud of.

He’s succeeded.

The new showroom and workshop on the Whitebridge estate is the latest step in David’s journey, and he’d be delighted to see you at the open day on Saturday 19th March.
