Hallmark Security League Div 1 (South)
Tuesday 26th February 2019
In the so-called El Stonio derby, between the two teams sharing Wellbeing Park, it was the Old Alleynians who came out on top, with a dominating display and a flurry of late goals. Due to them being in different leagues, it was the first time that they had played each other, in a competitive game, for over 20 years.
The match started with the Old Boys, who with Wilson injured and regulars Heard, Vernon, Askey, Byers and Hall, rested on the bench, in control, knocking the ball about confidently, without threatening the home goal. In fact, it was Dominoes who had the best chance, when a miss-kick in the Alleynians defence, after 13mins, let in Christoph Aziomale through on goal.
However, stand in keeper Tom Degg was quick off his line to make a good block, and the danger was cleared. This was costly to the Doms as a couple of mins later the Old Boys opened the scoring through Jack Tomlinson who easily converted Michael Williams cross.
Old Boys nearly doubled their lead a few mins later. Another Williams cross from the right went right through to Dave Ablewhite on the opposite wing, his return found Tomlinson, whose shot was cleared off the line to Matt Thomas, who unfortunately cleared the bar. They did increase their lead on 35mins, when yet another Williams cross caused havoc in the Doms defence before the ball ended up with Jonny Kapend on the edge of the area, who slammed it into the back of the net, giving keeper Ben James no chance. Ablewhite headed a Cameron Sinclair corner over, just before half time.
Half Time:- Stone Dominoes 0 – 2 Stone Old Alleynians
The Doms had a half-chance early in the 2nd half, but the shot went high and wide. Kapend outpaced the home defence and crossed for Thomas, who just cleared the bar. However the 3rd goal wasn’t long coming, a cross into the box for Old Alleynians eager forwards and several shots were blocked before Kyle Blake slotted home just inside the post in the 55th min.
A long ball into the box from Dominoes bounced and hit the bar, without anyone touching the ball. The Old Boys then emphasised their superiority with three goals in the last 10 mins. First Ablewhite dummied a Sinclair corner for Tomlinson to back heel for his 2nd, then a superb half volley by Luke Askey, picking up a Rich Hall pass and spotting James off his line, from 25 yards and finally a minute into added time, centre back Adam Pope, strolled into his opponents half and hit a screamer, just inside the post.
