Stone “Stay at Home” street party to celebrate VE Day 75th Anniversary

With lockdown ongoing, A Little Bit of Stone is championing the campaign for local residents to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE day by hosting their own front garden picnic parties – social distancing allowing.

In March, Stone Town Council revealed their plans to host a three day High Street celebration to mark the anniversary – however with the current lockdown and plans on ice, ALBOS still wanted to encourage local residents across the community to come together to mark the occasion!

On the early May Bank Holiday, Friday 8th May, the country will mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, the date of formal acceptance of the surrender of Nazi Germany from World War 2. To commemorate the anniversary we are calling on Stone residents to take part in a community-based socially distanced “Stay at Home” celebration!

Stone families are encouraged to bust out the bunting and fly their flags as they decorate their homes in red, white and blue! Starting with a 2 minute silence on the doorstep at 11am, take a picnic on your front garden from 12pm. Pull out a rug, pop up a table and bring your best picnic to your front garden from lunchtime!

Sandwiches, sausage rolls, a grapefruit wrapped in foil with cheese and pineapple – and if you’re feeling exotic a prawn ring or vol-au-vent all make great additions to a picnic.

Winston Churchill’s iconic speech will be shown on the BBC at 3pm, and to round off the day the Royal British Legion is asking for people to help commemorate the 75th anniversary by joining in with a UK-wide rendition of Dame Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again” at 9pm. BBC One will be featuring the singalong as part of its special broadcast programming for the day.

On the day we’ll be asking people to send us their pictures and videos as we create a gallery to mark the occasion. We’ll be using the hashtag #StoneVEDay so tag your posts when you make them! Head over to our event here to see what’s happening around Stone!
