Stone’s new First Citizen has taken on the chain of office.
Jason Metters succeeded Philip Leason as the new Stone Mayor at the town council’s annual meeting on Tuesday, 13th May.

Councillor Metters, 34, was elected as a town representative two years ago. He grew up in Stone and during his youth was recognised for his service to the local area, including receiving the Princess Diana Memorial Award for years of voluntary work across many projects, including The War Graves Commission, Millennium Volunteers, and as Chairman for the Stafford and Stone’s District Youth Council.
He studied at Keele University before working in financial services and education in Switzerland, France, and Vietnam. He is now Deputy CEO of a charity focusing on men’s health and patient advocacy.
When not working or serving his community he enjoys the liberal arts, the classics, economics, card games, technology, eastern philosophy, and socialising with new friends and old – when he can find the time.
He said:
“I joined the town council with the intention of representing constituents that are passionate about the value of community. As Mayor, I am proud to be in a position that recognises the fantastic work that others in Stone participate in each day.
“I know there are many of you that contribute to our community spirit in your own way. I have a tough role to live up to after the exemplary standard upheld by my predecessors, but I look forward to following their example in the year ahead.”
During the meeting Councillor Metters announced that Sarah Goodall will be the Mayor’s Consort during the civic year and Reverend Paul Kingman will be the Mayor’s Chaplain.
Councillor Andrew Best was appointed as Deputy Mayor for the year, with Rosalind Best serving as Deputy Mayor’s Consort.

Alongside the congratulations given to the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor, a tribute was paid to Councillor Leason who has now completed his third stint as the town’s First Citizen.
Councillor Jill Hood said:
“He first began (as Town Mayor) in 1987 and he has picked up quite a following. He has been an exemplary Mayor, acting as an ambassador for Stone Town Council, and it is obvious the respect residents have for Philip.”
