Are you still looking for that Christmas gift with a difference for a friend or loved one? Then AW Wines’ Appreciation Day gift vouchers may be just what you’re looking for.
Buy one and your loved one can spend a day or half-day with an expert learning and tasting their way through a range of drinks in the beautiful setting of the Walled Garden Carpenter’s Shop at Sugnall, near Stone.
This beautiful rural venue at the heart of the 1,500-acre Sugnall Estate is the perfect setting to escape to for a spell of self-indulgence, learning more about your favourite drinks.
Whether it’s whisky or wines, Champagne or Cognac, Mojito Mixology or just wanting to grow your confidence when choosing wines, then there’s an Appreciation Day to suit you.
An ideal gift for those hard-to-buy-for friends, relatives or work colleagues, the Appreciation Days are run throughout the year, usually in groups of around 10 and are available in half-day (usually either a weekend morning or weekday evening) or full day, usually at the weekend.
What’s included in an Appreciation Day?
Full-day courses usually start with welcome drinks, tea, coffee and soft drinks, then there’s usually two talk-and-tasting sessions before lunch, with a short break in between. Water and soft drinks provided throughout.
Lunch is usually a relaxed, delicious event and can include the opportunity to sample some of what you have been learning about with food (especially for wine courses). Lunches are prepared by the Sugnall Walled Garden kitchen cooks and include seasonal items as available from the garden’s produce. Most dietary requirement can be accommodated by letting us know when you book.
The tasting sessions consist of any number of samples chosen by the ‘expert’ tutor to illustrate their particular talk. There are always ‘spittoons’ to hand, however all participants are advised to think very carefully about driving after an appreciation day.
Afternoon sessions again consist of two talk and tasting sessions with a short break for tea in between with the day finishing late afternoon or early evening, just in time to head out and put that new-found knowledge to the test!
All the glassware, equipment, course notes, pens paper etc. are provided – you simply need to turn up to the venue in time to join the course.
Half days, are literally that, usually a shorter versions of the full day course and often held on a weekday evening. There’s no lunch included, of course, but light refreshments both on reception and between sessions are provided.

How to Book an Appreciation Day
Vouchers for the Appreciation Days are available from either of AW Wines retail outlets (Old School Wines or Sugnall Tearoom) or online from www.awwines.co.uk
When you purchase your voucher it is presented in a lovely card gift box containing the voucher, the course details and details of how to activate the voucher. There is the option to have the gift boxed wrapped and/or sent to a recipient (in the UK) free of charge.
The recipient of the voucher will then need to contact AW Wines to activate their Appreciation Day. They will then stay in touch with them to arrange a convenient course date for them to attend. Each voucher has a unique reference number when issued which will need to be quoted when contacting AW Wines.
Once the convenient course is booked, they simply need to make their way to Sugnall – between Eccleshall and Stone – to enjoy their Appreciation Day!
