£400,000 play area boost for Westbridge Park

Westbridge Park is in line for a brand new £400,000 play area similar to those at Victoria Park and Wildwood Park in Stafford.

Stafford Borough Council has allocated the funds for 2015/16 in its four-year financial plan, which was debated by councillors last night (25th November).

A wooden play area was removed for safety reasons in 2009

Stone borough councillor Philip Leason asked leisure services cabinet member Mike Smith for more information on the ‘destination park’ at yesterday’s meeting.

Cllr Smith said: “We’ve got a destination park in Victoria Park and we’ve got one in Wildwood Park, and it’s the intention to provide something similar at Westbridge Park.”

Hopefully we’ll have more details soon on exactly what kind of facilities will be delivered at Westbridge Park and when work will start.

The funding news comes after the borough council’s plans to deliver a new leisure centre and other facilities at the park – funded by a supermarket on the site – hit the skids. We have lots of articles on that particular issue HERE.

Town and borough councillor Jill Hood said today: “The Keep Westbridge Park Green campaign group and the residents of Stone continued to put pressure on Stafford Borough Council’s Cabinet to provide suitable play areas at Westbridge Park. Now we have a result. It’s fantastic news.”

Actually, the Keep Westbridge Park Green group stated “KWPG is a group of residents acting independently of party politics and committed to retaining Westbridge Park for leisure and recreational use.

It opposes the designation of the Park for mixed use development and the building of a supermarket on the Park. ”
Had they made a U-turn two years ago a store of 30,000 sq ft ( a Supermarket) would have been built and part of the green would have been taken up as indicated on Borough plans and backed by Conservative councillors.

Actually, the Keep Westbridge Park Green group stated that they “did not want any development on Westbridge Park”

I welcome their u-turn but we could have had this two years ago.
