£60 reward for a good recycler in Stone

Someone in Stone is in line to win £60 this month – just for being a good recycler.

The latest address has been chosen at random and borough council recycling experts will be visiting the lucky house later this month. If the householder can prove they have no recycling in their green bin then they will be handed £60.

Christine Clarvis of Great Haywood became the first winner of the recycling doorstep challenge. And last month 24-year-old mum Stacey Rose picked up £60 when the council called at her home in the Coton area of Stafford – but only after several neighbours had failed the test.

The initiative is part of a campaign from the borough council to boost household recycling to 60% – the current figure is around 54%. And council bosses say the move will help keep council tax down – with an increase of just one percent on their recycling worth nearly £14,000 to the authority.

Officers will knock at the door of the randomly selected home each month and offer £60 if there is nothing that can be recycled in the green waste bin – a scheme dubbed ‘Coming to a Bin Near You’.

The address is kept secret although the council publicise the area they will be visiting in advance.

Councillor Frank Finlay, Cabinet Member for Environment and Health, said: “We have had tremendous support in the past for our recycling initiatives and I think this is already helping to spur the community on. Where other councils may have looked to penalise residents for not recycling properly – we want to reward those who are doing all they can.”

  • My problem with this is there just isnt enough room in my blue bin for everything we recycle, so once its full we HAVE to put the surplus in our green bin…
