Staffordshire’s Chief Fire Officer has again called for people to be extra vigilant following the announcement of a 96-hour Fire Brigades Union strike.
The national union has called industrial action running from 6pm on Friday 31st October to 6pm on Tuesday 4th November.
Peter Dartford, who is also President of the Chief Fire Officers Association, said:
“It is disappointing to hear that the Fire Brigade Union has called another strike period, this time running for a total of 96 hours. This is the longest consecutive period of industrial action in the dispute so far and falls on the weekend before Bonfire Night which is historically one of our busiest times of year.
“With this in mind, it is even more important that people take additional safety precautions. I would strongly urge people not to attend Bonfire Night parties at home – the majority of fireworks related injuries take place at private events held by family or friends. Organised celebrations have to adhere to strict health and safety laws so people attending them are far safer.
“I would, as always, like to reassure residents that we will once again have robust contingency plans in place and will continue to provide an emergency response to all life-threat situations. We will also answer all 999 calls.
“However, people must be aware that we may not be able to respond to every incident and I would reiterate the importance of being extra vigilant during the strike periods.”
It will be the 12th round of strike action to be held since the dispute between the FBU and the Government began in September 2013 over pensions.
