Decision day nears on Frank Jordan Centre

The decision on whether Stone Town Council wants to continue running the Frank Jordan Community Centre will be made in December.

The town council’s general purposes committee agreed at their meeting on 6th November to defer the decision to their next meeting on Tuesday 2nd December.

In 2005, Stone Town Council took on the Victorian former school building on a 35-year lease from the borough council – but has the opportunity to hand it back at a 10-year break point in 2015.The borough council has to be informed by 15th January next year of the town council’s decision.

Cllrs Geoff Collier (Con), Harry Brunt (Lab) and Joyce Farnham (Con) all told the meeting that the town council should not renew the lease and walk away from the Frank Jordan Centre. They said the building was in a bad state, was not a popular venue with people in the town and needed a huge amount of money spending on it.

Cllr Jill Hood (Ind) disagreed, saying that a rethink was needed on how the centre was used but that the town council should continue operating it as a community centre.

The committee agreed to defer the decision to allow councillors to discuss the town council’s possible bid to take over Stone youth centre and to run it as a community facility, a move that would have obvious repercussions on any decision regarding the Frank Jordan Centre.

A special meeting of the general purposes committee will be held on Thursday 13th November at 7pm to discuss the youth centre.

The Youth Centre has been refurbished recently and has to be a better bet than the FJC. If the Town Council did take it on could it become the new FJC to keep the name ?
