Moddershall Cricket Club’s 1st XI travelled to Knypersley last weekend in a match that was badly affected by the rain.

Wet conditions led to a two-hour delay, reducing the match to 37 overs each side. Winning the toss, Moddershall fielded first and made early inroads into the Knypersley top order with Matt Goodwin (2-23) taking two early wickets and reducing them to 21-2. However, Knypersley fought back with an 86 run, 3rd-wicket partnership. The introduction of Muhammed Anis Raza and Tom Hope put a halt to this developing partnership and Knypersley began to struggle. With Raza taking 2-30 and Hope 2-20, they restricted Knypersley to 150-7.

In reply, Knypersley opened with their overseas left-arm spinner, professional Nayyar Abbas, who reduced Moddershall to 22-2. Kelsall and Salahuddin steadied the innings with a 42-run partnership until Salahuddin and Hope were dsimissed with the score on 64. Housley joined his captain and a 63-run partnership ensued before Housley fell for 20. Moddershall then lost a further two wickets in pursuit of their target but in the end the weather was the winner, leaving captain Kelsall, 64 not out and Moddershall 16 runs short of victory and giving the winning draw to Knypersley.

Hanford were all out for 104. In reply with the skies looking threatening, Moddershall made haste and scored the required runs in only 22 overs for the loss of four wickets, with Stanley Basraj finishing 45 not out and Dean Tooth 38. Phoenix v Onnerley & Maer – Lost by 37 Runs

The Phoenix side lost their 100% record on their travels to Onnerley & Maer by slipping to a 37-run loss. Onnerley elected to bat first and in trying conditions scored a creditable 140 all out in 45 overs. The target was achievable and the Phoenix were confident, especially on reaching 92-2 with Jayathilaka set on 41 and opener Jayawardane on 37, but Onnerley bowler Edwards had other ideas as he ripped through the Phoenix innings taking a ‘hat-trick’ in his figures on 5-37 as the Phoenix lost their last eight wickets for only 11 runs, a collapse of catastrophic portions to lose their first game of the season. However, they remain clear at the top by 16 points and look to get back to winning ways next week.
