Voters in Stone are being urged to be ready to have their say in May’s borough and parish council elections – even if they’re going to be on holiday on polling day.
With several Bank Holidays coming up, many people are planning breaks, which could see them away from home on Thursday 5th May. This is the day for voting in elections that will decide the make-up of Stafford Borough Council and parish councils across the borough, including Stone Town Council, Stone Rural Parish Council and Swynnerton Parish Council.
The first UK-wide referendum for over 30 years, on the voting system used for elections to the UK Parliament, is taking place on the same day.
Voters planning to be away on the day can ensure they are able to take part in all three polls by applying to vote by post or by proxy.
Borough returning officer Ian Thompson said: “Now is the time to make sure you are registered to vote before the deadline of Thursday 14th April. To apply for a postal or proxy vote, you can call 01785 619424 or print off the forms from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk.
“People don’t always realise that they can have their say in different ways, including by post or by asking someone you trust (a ‘proxy’) to cast your vote for you. So if you are going to be away on Thursday 5th May, take a few minutes now to make sure your voice will still be heard.”
