Stone resident and former Yarletian turns 100!

Gordon HewittFour current Yarlet School pupils had the privilege of meeting an Old Yarletian who recently celebrated his 100th birthday!

Sophie and Freddie, Head Boy and Head Girl, were accompanied by Monty and Annabel from Year 2 on a special visit to see Mr Gordon Hewitt at his home in Stone. Gordon was a pupil at Yarlet and left in 1932 aged 13.

Mr Hewitt celebrated his 100th Birthday on Friday 11th October and the children took him gifts and a card signed by all the current pupils at the school. They were astounded about the number of cards that he has already received but, at the time of their visit, he was yet to receive one from the Queen!
The children were very interested to hear about Mr Hewitt’s experience during World War 2 and were saddened to hear that he lost both his brother and his best friend, both OYs, in the same war.
On returning to school they took the opportunity to visit the school chapel and find the names of Mrs Hewitt’s brother and friend, R Stubbs, on the remembrance plaque. Both men, along with other OYs that lost their lives in the Great War and World War 2, are remembered each year in the Yarlet remembrance service and a wreath is laid in their memory by the Head Boy and Head Girl. This year’s service will be especially poignant for Freddie and Sophie having met Mr Hewitt.
