On Sunday 15th December ALBOS took over the Poste of Stone for the second A Little Bit of a Charity Christmas Quiz.
This year, the Wetherspoons venue hosted 19 teams, all competing to win our fantastic top three prizes; a Christmas dinner hamper, four tickets to Sleeping Beauty at the Regent Theatre, and a real Christmas Tree! For those who missed out on being in the top three, there was the chance of winning our raffle, with prizes including a framed print of a technical F1 drawing from Vantage Point Creative worth £80, a festive hamper from Marks & Spencer, a £40 voucher from Blanc NRI, a case of Prosecco and a £20 voucher from our Wetherspoon hosts, and many more.
The evening was a fantastic success, and we raised £368.50 which we’ve topped up to £400 for our chosen charity, the Crown Wharf Theatre.
Thanks to Wetherspoons for hosting us, Quizmaster Collin Taylor, all of the people who took part in the quiz and the raffle and of course the many local businesses that offered to donate prizes for this good cause.

The day before the quiz we went along on the Joule’s Crown Wharf tour to find out more about the project and the Joule’s development that will house the theatre.
Joule’s is the 6th oldest beer trademark in the UK, and much of its heritage is based around Stone, where it was originally brewed and shipped down the canal. Joule’s was the first UK beer that hit the USA, and was one of the beers on the Titanic when it sank, meaning there’s probably still some sitting on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean!
Joule’s (pronounced like goals, for those, like myself who were unsure!) is renovating the Crown Wharf site, with the community very much in the forefront of their plans. They refer to the project as their second life in Stone; a new chapter but very much including their history into the development, even down to building their trademark cross into the steel beams of the structure. There will be several different areas within the site, including what they call their “Cabinet of Curiosities” showcasing pieces of their former life, a Farmers Bar, and a Theatre Bar. The entire ethos for the project is to do it right, not do it quickly, but they hope to be aiming for opening by the end of 2020.
Within the structure will sit the Crown Wharf Theatre, the building which Joule’s have donated to the Theatre Trustees. Joule’s will provide the shell of the building, watertight and safe, but completely empty. From then on the job of turning the shell into a usable, practical space will be down to the Trust, and they estimate they will need in the region of £500,000.
The trust is looking to provide not just a theatre but a community space that could be used for anything from comedy nights to workshops, private events, and a community cinema. They are looking for anyone who can help with the project, whether it be by sponsorship and fundraising, or donations in kind like offering services such as a painters, plasterers or electricians.
If you’d like to get involved, contact them on their Facebook page, via email. or head to their website.
