A JustGiving page for Afghan evacuees in Newcastle has raised almost £3,000 from the public in just over a week of being live.
The JustGiving page was set up in partnership with local charity the Community Foundation for Staffordshire, to take donations to be used to provide essential items for the evacuees.
It was set up after a large number of Afghan families were placed into short-term accommodation in Newcastle-under-Lyme by the Home Office, until being found permanent homes around the country.
Staffordshire County Council has also thanked communities for continuing to donate clothes, toys and other items, but requested that people who want to donate should do so through the JustGiving page only.
Local public services including councils and the NHS are supporting these families with health, education and other needs and have also been inundated with offers of support from the community.
Leader of Staffordshire County Council Alan White said:
“We have been amazed at the generosity of local people and the outpouring of support since these Afghan evacuees arrived in our county, whether that’s through physical donations or through the JustGiving page.
“We are now requesting that people only give through the JustGiving page, as this will go directly into purchasing what these families need. It also means we don’t have any issues with the storage of physical items. It’s been really hearting to see so many people donating to the cause – their generosity will make a real difference to these families.”
