With Parliament being dissolved on the 30th May, Sir Bill Cash has published a letter about his retirement.
On his website, Sir Bill writes:
“As Parliament dissolves on Thursday, I send a massive thank you to all my constituents and the people of Staffordshire, whether you voted for me or not, over my last forty years in Parliament.
It has been the greatest privilege and honour to have been your MP and to have represented you in the House of Commons of our great country.
The people of Staffordshire are the best of Britain, and have been so in peacetime and in war. In every walk of life, young and old, in businesses large and small, in all the public services, in the NHS, in farming, and in the voluntary sector and local government, I have witnessed in your soundness of judgment and common sense a patriotic belief in our country and our local community and our democracy. I am proud and grateful to you for allowing me to be amongst you.
My wife, Biddy, and I salute and thank you for being you.”
Below is the text from the letter he has also published:
“As Parliament is dissolved tomorrow and I retire after 40 years as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Stafford and then Stone, for whom I have had the privilege and honour to represent since May 1984, I send a massive thanks to all my constituents and my local Association.
I also send huge thanks to all those MPs and colleagues of whatever political Party during that time who have contributed to our debates, whether they agreed with me or not.
I also particularly thank the 17.4 million voters of our great country who voted in the historic Referendum of 2016 for Brexit and for the sovereignty for which I have campaigned since 1986.
By this, we have regained our self-government and passed the legislation to guarantee that sovereignty following the General Election in 2019.
So now, aged 84 and the oldest Member of Parliament, I leave the House of Commons with gratitude and pride in our democracy and our great country.
With fond memories,
Bill Cash”
