A planning application for the construction of two floodlit padel courts with a canopy at Stone Lawn Tennis & Squash Club has received overwhelming support, with the vast majority of consultation responses backing the proposal.
Growing support for a fast-growing sport
The application, submitted to Stafford Borough Council (Ref: 24/39897/FUL), seeks approval to introduce two padel courts at the club on Newcastle Road. Padel, a rapidly expanding sport across the UK, combines elements of tennis and squash and is renowned for being easy to learn and highly accessible for players of all ages.
Out of 22 neighbour consultation responses, 20 were in favour, one was neutral, and one objected—but not due to opposition to the courts themselves. Many supporters highlighted health, fitness, and accessibility benefits, as well as the potential economic boost for Stone.
Court location and site details
The proposed courts will be located outdoors, using a section of the club’s existing car park, reducing available parking spaces. They will be positioned parallel to the railway embankment, optimising space while ensuring minimal disruption to other club facilities. The courts will also feature a canopy and floodlights, allowing play throughout the year.

What residents are saying
One supporter commented: “This would be a brilliant addition to the town. Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports, and it would be fantastic for Stone to have this facility. Currently, we have to travel over 40 minutes to play, which shouldn’t be the case.”
Another resident noted: “The courts would encourage people of all ages to get active, and the club is well-located for walking and cycling access. It’s a great opportunity for the community.”
Local sporting boost
The Staffordshire Tennis Association has also officially backed the application, noting that the courts would enhance local and county-level racket sport facilities.
The project has drawn comparisons to recent sporting improvements in Stone, including investment in Stone Old Alleynians’ football facilities. Many responses suggested the courts would help establish Stone as a key location for racket sports, making it a more attractive town for sports tourism.
Addressing concerns
While the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, one neighbour initially had a neutral stance but later objected due to a lack of information about the exact location of the courts within the club’s boundaries. They indicated they may revise their position if their concerns are addressed.

This will be an amazing addition to the tennis club. It is great for people who are retired because it is not as fast as tennis but equally energetic. It is great socially. My wife and I play in Spain and we would very much welcome a local club to play at rather than having to drive a distance. We play when on holiday in Spain and they embrace he sport. Ther are numerous Padel clubs with international clientele. If this is implemented it will be booked out well in advance.
