Fire service in hunt for more women

A new DVD created by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service hopes to encourage young girls into becoming firefighters.

The DVD comes after a recent study has shown that just 10% of all national firefighter applications come from women.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service co-ordinated the project in conjunction with a group of Staffordshire teenagers and media company Born Communications.

Joanne Hammersley, equality and diversity officer at the fire service, said: “A group of girls aged 14-16 from Staffordshire were tasked to produce a film that provided facts about the life of real women firefighters to hopefully encourage more females to take up the roles.”

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has launched a new Girls Can Be Firefighters website where people can watch the film and get lots more information regarding women in the service.
