Stone Male Voice Choir is about to enter a new chapter in its history – by welcoming women into its ranks. And people in the town have been urged to sing up and get involved.
The male voice choir had been singing in the town for the last 41 years – its 40th anniversary was marked last year in the carpet bed in Stonefield Park. Falling numbers – the choir had lost over 20 members over the last few years – have now led to a new approach.
The choir is now be a mixed choir – and members old and new will be choosing a new name at a meeting on Wednesday 19th September at Broomfield Court Community Centre off Radford Street at 7.30pm.
People in the town interested in singing and joining the new-look choir have been urged to attend the meeting and get involved.
Secretary Trevor Pritchard said: “Our present choir has performed for the last 41 years and has enjoyed many years in friendship and harmony. We have made a decision to change the format of our choir, to include lady members. We are anticipating an increase in membership of ladies and gentlemen so that we’ll be able to perform a variety of songs in our new-style choir.”
The choir’s musical director is Grahame Edwards who was appointed in May this year. His aim is to perform music from the shows, light numbers, popular ballads, fun numbers and medleys. Accompanist is Karen Shutt, who will assist Grahame in spearheading the new choir.
Trevor added: “They both feel that this new challenge will enable the choir to grow together into a respected music group that will be an inspiration to Stone and the surrounding borough for many years to come.”
