The park is one of six green spaces across Stafford Borough to have secured the prestigious accolade again this year, with Stone’s cemetery also retaining its Green Flag status for the seventh time.

The Green Flag Award, run by Keep Britain Tidy, is the international benchmark for parks and green spaces. It recognises places that are welcoming, safe, well-maintained and environmentally sustainable – and it’s clear that Stonefield Park continues to meet that gold standard year after year.

Green heart of the community

A well-loved feature of the town, Stonefield Park sits close to the heart of the community and is enjoyed by all ages, from toddlers exploring the play area to older residents finding peace in its planting and green spaces. The park also plays host to outdoor events and activities throughout the year.

While some might take the quality of the park for granted, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to keep it looking its best.

Joss Presland, Head of Operations at Stafford Borough Council, said:

“It is great to have independent feedback from judges representing a national organisation about how well maintained and managed these important green spaces are. A big thank you to all those who do excellent work on the ground and behind the scenes to ensure our parks and green spaces are appreciated by the tens of thousands of people who visit them.

We should also not forget the contribution of the community, especially the ‘Friends’ groups, that support the work of the council at these sites and are instrumental in us receiving these Green Flags.”

Why Green Flags matter

The awards come at a time when access to high-quality public green space has never been more important. Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said:

“Congratulations to everyone who has worked tirelessly to ensure that these parks and green spaces achieve the high standards required for the Green Flag Award.

They are a vital green space for communities in Stafford Borough to enjoy nature, and during the ongoing cost of living crisis it is a free and safe space for families to socialise.

It also provides important opportunities for local people and visitors to reap the physical and mental health benefits of green space.”

In total, six borough-managed spaces received the 2025 award:

  • Stonefield Park – 10th consecutive Green Flag
  • Stone Cemetery – 7th Green Flag
  • Victoria Park, Stafford – 19th Green Flag
  • Wildwood Park, Stafford – 6th Green Flag
  • Tixall Road Crematorium – 14th Green Flag
  • Eccleshall Road Cemetery – 8th Green Flag

All sites are freely accessible and maintained by Stafford Borough Council, with help from local volunteers and community groups.
