A34 in Stone to be closed overnight for two weeks in April

A34

A stretch of the A34 will be closed overnight in Stone for two weeks in April to allow surfacing work to be carried out as part of the Meaford development.

Work is scheduled to get under way on Monday 4th April for two weeks in two phases.

The stretch of A34 that will be closed is between the Darlaston Inn roundabout and the Whitebridge Lane/Millennium Way roundabout. Traffic will be able to use the roundabout as normal to access the Whitebridge housing estate and industrial estate.

The road will close each night at 9pm and re-opening at 6am the following morning.

Phase 1 – A34 northbound will be closed from Monday 4th April for five nights

The A34 northbound will be closed from the junction with Millennium Way/Whitebridge Lane to the A51 Bury Bank / Darlaston Inn roundabout. The Darlaston Inn roundabout will be open to traffic as usual and access to A34 northbound will remain available for vehicles exiting Meaford View/the service road, including the George & Dragon pub.

Phase 2 – A34 southbound will be closed from Monday 11th April for five nights

The A34 southbound will be closed from the Darlaston Inn roundabout to the junction with Whitebridge Lane. Access from the Darlaston Inn roundabout will be provided for vehicles accessing Meaford View/service road, including the George & Dragon. Access to cottages on the A34 near Millennium Way will be available via the southbound carriageway from Millennium Way roundabout (a traffic management operative will be present at this access point).

A signed diversion route will be in place via A5013 / A519 / A51.

While the works are expected to be completed within the above dates, there is the potential for delay in the event of an incident on the M6 which prevents the A34 from being closed due to increased volumes of traffic, in which case works will re-commence the following evening.

Following completion of the surfacing, works will continue through towards the end of May. The scheme is currently due to be substantially completed on 24th May 2016.

[box type=”info” ]The 12-month reconstruction of part of the A34 is paving the way for the construction of the new Meaford Business Park and gas-fired power station by developer St Modwen.

The scheme, which was the county’s second Government Growth Deal funded project to get off the ground, includes the construction of new roundabouts on Meaford Road at its junctions with the A34 and Rookery Lane to allow easy access to the business park site.

The business park is expected to create up to 2,500 jobs.[/box]

[box type=”shadow” ]Staffordshire County Council’s economy leader Mark Winnington said: “We’re pleased to see this scheme move into its final stages over the next few weeks – on time and on budget. It is hugely important for Staffordshire as it will pave the way for over two thousand jobs and significant investment. This is the largest brownfield development site in the county and one we all want to see brought back into productive use. We know this hasn’t been easy for the local community and road users and would again like to thank people for their patience. This is an important development for Staffordshire which will bring real economic benefits to our county.”[/box]
