Josh Barber, an apprentice at Stone Based ABB, has been named as a finalist in the Institution of Engineering and Technology Achievement Awards
In a nationwide competition to recognise the best & brightest apprentices & technicians, Josh Barber from Newcastle Under Lyme is now set to join other finalists at a prestigious awards ceremony hosted by TV presenter and engineer Kate Bellingham in London.
In recognition of his outstanding engineering & technical understanding, and his work as a role model, Josh was selected as a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category in the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Apprentice and Technician Awards scheme. The scheme aims to raise the profile of the good work that apprentices and technicians contribute to engineering businesses.
Josh and the rest of the shortlisted applicants will attend the IET Achievement Awards Ceremony in London on 16 November 2016. The winner in each category will be announced and will walk away with a trophy, certificate, £1,000 and two years free membership of the IET. The IET will also cover the cost of the apprentice winner’s technician professional registration application fee, when they are ready to apply.
Josh said: “I am very excited to be a finalist in the IET Achievement Awards and am looking forward to the awards event. My apprenticeship has combined work experience with academic studies and I feel like my work makes an important contribution. Because many senior managers at ABB started out as apprentices, I can see by example the possible career paths that I can follow.”
Jon Downs, Director Grid Integration UK and Ireland, said: “Everyone at ABB in Stone is proud to see Josh achieving recognition from the IET for his hard work and commitment.”
Professor Jeremy Watson incoming IET President said: “The standard of this year’s entries was higher than ever making the judging extremely difficult. All the IET Apprentice and Technician Award finalists demonstrated skills and knowledge through their work that went far beyond their role. They have taken on challenging tasks and through innovation and determination to succeed have brought real benefits to their companies. They have been recognised by the IET for their achievements and for being role models to future generations of engineering apprentices by having the potential to inspire others to develop their own engineering career.”
