Christ Church Middle School in Old Road has been granted academy status by the Government.
The decision means the “outstanding” school will not be controlled by the local authority and will have more freedom over budgets and its curriculum.
It is the first middle school in Staffordshire to achieve academy status.
Headteacher Chris Waghorn said: “We are delighted. We’ll have freedom of choice and be able to promote how best to use our resources for the benefit of our youngsters.
“We can direct money where we wish to spend it and sort out our administration.
“We want to continue to be an inclusive school and at the heart of the community. Academy status will help maintain our position and will allow us to deliver educational excellence.”
A new school badge has been designed to mark the new status, created by Year 8 pupil Lizzie Aspey.
