Air ambulance responds after pedestrian struck by HGV on A34

A man was seriously injured after a collision involving a pedestrian and a HGV on the A34 at Yarlet on Tuesday afternoon.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called to the northbound carriageway at 12.29pm on Tuesday 24 March, after receiving several 999 calls reporting the incident.

The incident happened near the Greyhound at Yarlet, between Stone and Stafford, and the emergency response included an ambulance and a Midlands Air Ambulance helicopter. An off duty West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedic also came across the scene and stopped to help before crews arrived.

According to West Midlands Ambulance Service, the pedestrian, a man, suffered serious injuries in the collision.

A spokeswoman for the service said:

“The pedestrian, a man, had sustained serious injuries in the collision and was quickly given trauma care by the team of medics.

“Once the man’s condition was stabilised, he was conveyed on blue lights by land ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

“The aircrew medics travelled in the ambulance to continue advanced trauma care enroute to A&E.”

The air ambulance was sent with a doctor and a critical care paramedic on board, reflecting the seriousness of the incident.

An off duty paramedic was first on hand to provide aid before the arriving crews took over the man’s treatment at the roadside.

He was then taken by land ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital, with the aircrew continuing advanced trauma care on the way.

Staffordshire Police appeal for witnesses

The police have issued an appeal for anyone who may have caputred what happened.

“We are appealing for witnesses after a serious collision near Stone.

We were called at 12.30pm this afternoon (Tuesday 24 March) to reports of a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a white Mercedes-Benz lorry on the A34 northbound, near to The Greyhound Inn pub.

The pedestrian, a man, was taken to hospital.

The road has re-opened.
