Concerns about cancelled or postponed elections have been raised recently during discussions around local government reorganisation.

For some residents, the worry is that votes could be quietly delayed or removed. For others, it is the opposite, that holding elections during a period of structural change could be seen as a poor use of public money.
For Stone, it is important to separate national debate from local reality.
Despite the ongoing conversation about reorganisation, no elections are currently due in Stone during 2026.
When elections are actually due in Stone
Stone residents are represented by several layers of local government, along with the Police and Crime Commissioner. None of these are scheduled to go to the polls this year.
The next planned elections are:
- Stone Town Council, 2027
- Stafford Borough Council, 2027
- Staffordshire County Council, 2029
- Police and Crime Commissioner, 2027
This means there are no local, county, or policing elections planned for Stone in 2026.
Why election postponement is being discussed nationally
The idea of postponing elections has come up in areas where councils are being merged or replaced by new authorities.
In those cases, the argument is that it makes little sense to elect councillors to a body that may only exist for a short time. Running an election can cost tens of thousands of pounds, covering staffing, venues, ballot papers, security, and counting.
Where reorganisation is confirmed, central government can legislate to delay elections, usually by a year, with existing councillors remaining in post to ensure continuity. Councils themselves do not have the power to cancel their own elections.
The Police and Crime Commissioner question
There is also uncertainty around the future of Police and Crime Commissioners.
The government has indicated that it would like to abolish the role and move responsibilities into new governance arrangements, potentially linked to mayoral authorities. However, no legislation has yet been passed to remove the post.
As things stand, the next Police and Crime Commissioner election remains scheduled for 2027.
What this means for Stone residents
For now, there is no election in Stone that could be cancelled or postponed in 2026, because none are due.
Any future changes would need to be set out clearly in law, approved by Parliament, and communicated formally to voters. Until that happens, the existing election timetable remains in place.
As reorganisation plans develop, we will continue to track what they mean in practical terms for Stone, not just in headlines, but in how and when residents get their say.
