A group of adults with special needs from Stone who have helped to maintain Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s memorial garden for the last four years had their efforts recognised by the town’s mayor at a presentation last night.

The group, aged between 18 and 30, are members of the Trinity Skills for Life initiative and attend weekly sessions at the Memorial Garden where, come rain or shine, they spend two hours raking leaves, maintaining plants, planting and growing their own plants and tidying flowerbeds.

The group had their achievements to date celebrated at a special presentation evening on Tuesday 2nd August at St Dominic’s Priory School. Cllr June Price, Stone town mayor, was a special guest and presented awards to members of the Trinity Skills for Life group.

Memorial Garden Trustee David Lawrence said: “We have been working with Trinity Skills for Life for a number of years now so it is wonderful that the participants’ efforts and achievements have been recognised.

“Although I provide the guidance for how we want the garden to look, various members of the group often pass on their own thoughts and ideas. They have really helped to shape the landscape of the garden.”

The purpose of the garden is to provide a lasting and evolving memorial garden for the remembrance of past employees of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. The garden is located at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters at Pirehill, Stone.

The fire service maintains the memorial garden for the benefit, comfort and solace of bereaved families and friends.

  • I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful work you are doing. My son has a memorial plaque and a magnolia tree in the garden and it’s lovely to know that there are good people out there willing to look after for these in my absence. Once again thank you. x
