Plans have been submitted to convert the former double glazing shop in Edward Street into seven bedsits.
JPK Designs from Wolstanton have applied to Stafford Borough Council for permission to convert the building into the seven units.
The plans from JPK Design Ltd from Wolstanton would create seven bedsits with en-suite facilities and a communal dining room / kitchen on the ground floor. The shop windows at the front would be removed and replaced with traditional terraced door and windows, while part of a single-storey building at the back of the property would be demolished to provide more light to the ground-floor bedsits. The building’s current side entry would also be removed.
Local borough councillor Philip Leason has called in the plans for discussion by the planning committee because of the “overdevelopment of the site and the impact on local residents”.
Neighbours have also lodged formal complaints because of the extra vehicles that the development would bring in an area where on-road parking places are already at a premium.
One said: “In the evenings and at weekends and holidays there are no parking spaces already. This in effect makes the roads single file, hampering access for essential services. Twice recently an ambulance couldn’t make it to Alexandra Street and had to park on Victor Street.”
However, Staffordshire County Council’s highways department has no objections to the planned development “due to the original commercial traffic generation of the property being higher than the proposed domestic use”.
