Brilliant win for Stone at league leaders Shrewsbury

Stone Dominoes LFC

Shrewsbury Ladies 0 – Stone Dominoes 2: A quality performance on Sunday saw second-place Stone Dominoes LFC beat previously unbeaten league leaders Shrewsbury and close the gap at the top of the table to just three points.

The first half was close, with both teams coming close to scoring after equal amounts of possession, Kerry McCourt coming close for Stone with a free kick from the edge of the box. It was a stalemate at half-time, with Stone looking slightly the better of the two teams.

Stone started to dominate after the break, though, with strikers Mollie Prime and Vikki Garner defending from the front and closing down any potential long balls. After another Stone attack, Lauren Ward looped the ball into the box. It looked like it was heading straight into the keeper’s hands but midfielder Jules Kendrick somehow managed to outjump the keeper and headed the ball through her hands and into the empty goal.

From this point Stone dominated the next 30 minutes and after Mollie Prime was hacked down on the edge of the box, up stepped Holly Fowell with a tremendous free kick to extend Stone’s lead. Shrewsbury changed to a more attacking formation for the last 10 minutes and threw all their players forward. Stone stood up to the challenge and battled through to the final whistle and a brilliant victory. Becky Arnold was player of the match for a superb game at centre half.
