Get ready to experience a unique shopping experience as Stone prepares to welcome the Roving Canal Traders Association’s Floating Market to the Trent and Mersey Canal this Spring Bank Holiday.
This exciting event will take place over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday, the 27th of May, to Bank Holiday Monday, the 29th of May 2023. The market will be open daily between 10am and 5pm.
The Roving Canal Traders Association (RCTA) is a non-profit organisation that aims to promote and support the diverse array of Canal and River Trust (CRT) registered Roving Traders on our waterways. The RCTA has the support of Canal & River Trust and only works with licensed, insured, and appropriately rated food hygiene traders.
The Floating Market is an opportunity to see some of the unique traders that roam the UK’s waterways, selling everything from artisan cheeses, delicious pizzas, and homemade baked goods to bespoke wood and leather goods, beautiful crochet and knitted items, and even festival clothing. Some boats will also have other uses, such as being a therapy, theatre or cinema boat, making this a truly unique shopping experience.
The RCTA’s Floating Market in Stone will feature around 16 boats, and the traders attending will depend on who will be in the area at the time. This is the first time in many years that the RCTA has come to Stone, making it an exciting event for traders and the community alike.
With the Trent and Mersey canal running through the heart of Stone, we are the perfect location for the Floating Market.

Stone canal side is undoubtedly one of the town’s most valuable assets that we can make better use of. Hosting events is an essential way for the town council to improve the lives of the residents, and the floating market is a particularly exciting opportunity that also has the potential to bring in people from outside of Stone and generate new revenue for local businesses. It would be wonderful if the floating market became a regular occurrence on the town’s events calendar.
I commend the town council for collaborating on this project and the clerk’s team for organizing the event so efficiently. Their efforts have ensured that the community in Stone can enjoy this unique experience without any delay.”
