A community litter pick has been organised to clean up an area of the town in between Westbridge Park and the canal.
The clean-up has been organised by Stone resident Richard Evans. If you’d like to get involved, meet at Westbridge Park in front of the leisure centre at 10.30am on Sunday 19th May.
Richard explains here why he’s arranged the clean-up…

After a walk the other month around Stone I was dismayed at the amount of litter in the area of Westbridge Park and the canal towards St Michael’s School.
The area in question is littered with builder’s rubble, cupboard/full size doors, even a broken shopping trolley, along with a general build-up of rubbish (bottles, cans and various other rubbish). More of concern was the numerous deposits of ash along the hedgerows and towpaths, which I believe to be from the boaters emptying their fireplaces/stoves.
Having steen this I’ve taken a somewhat long journey through emails and various contacts at the Borough Council, Canal And River Trust and being lost in the system at the Environment Agency. In the time I’ve been getting in touch with the various organisations, there has been new growth of the vegetation in the area which has started to cover the areas in question.
After a flurry of activity on Thursday 9th May I have received confirmation to proceed and have taken delivery of 200 bags and six litter pickers.
It would be great if many people can turn up for this. All that is needed will be some additional litter pickers and if someone has a wheelbarrow to help transport the broken slabs that would be amazing. The litter that is picked will be collected by the StreetScene team the following morning. Sensible clothing, footwear and gloves essential.
I’m sure that this day will be a success for the area and community!
