Canoeists needed for world record bid

Stafford and Stone Canoe Club are looking for canoeists to take part in a 24-hour world record attempt to help raise £10,000 towards their new clubhouse on Westbridge Park.

The canoe slalom world record attempt is scheduled to start at 12pm on Saturday 22nd January and finish at 12pm on Sunday 23rd. Canoeists can slalom for as long as they like – right up to the full 24 hours – with those taking part raising sponsorship to help the club hit the £10,000 target.

The challenge is open to everyone – not just club members – and all types of canoes and kayaks can be used. The club hopes to include themed hours within the challenge, including fancy dress. Food and beer tents will be available to keep canoeists going through the night.

The new clubhouse is taking shape

Work on the new clubhouse is now well under way but the club needs to raise £10,000 to get the job finished. The club is home to a number of gold medallists and UK and world champions, and it wants to ensure that some of its members are at the 2012 Olympics in London. The new clubhouse is a huge part of their plans.

The club’s old timber building had been built in the 1970s and just wasn’t suitable any longer. The new building at the site in Westbridge Park will include a boat storage area, changing facilities, gym and kitchen area.
