Local young farmers have tugged on the heartstrings of a team of property developers for support in building a new tug of war rig.
Stoford, the firm developing the 6000+ car storage facilitiy at Stone Business Park, have donated £1,000 to Stone Young Farmers. The donation will allow the group to host a series of fun-packed tug of war battles between young people in the region.
Based at Moddershall Cricket Club in Staffordshire, Stone Young Farmers is a rural youth group that engages 10-26 year-olds in a variety of positive activities, including exciting challenges, social events and travel in the UK and abroad. Members are given the opportunity to make new friends and develop a host of new skills for life and work.
A familiar feature of countryside shows and club competitions, tug of war contests are a test of skill, strength, endurance and teamwork that traces its roots back to ancient Greece. Stoford’s donation will allow Stone Young Farmers to replace an old rig that had fallen into a state of disrepair and ensure that its team is in prime condition to take on other local clubs during the outdoor season, which runs until September.
Stoford development manager, Angus Huntley, said: “As a business Stoford has a successful track record of major development and regeneration projects, but I don’t recall us being involved in the construction of a tug of war rig before!
“Stone Young Farmers provides a terrific framework of activities for young people, who do some outstanding work in the local community. We’re delighted to be able to support the club and hope that the new rig will see many competitive tussles over the months and years ahead.”
One of more than 600 similar clubs in England and Wales, Stone Young Farmers was first established in 1976, and is dedicated to supporting young people in agriculture and the countryside. Part of the Staffordshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs, the club enters teams into regular regional and national events and activities, from dairy stock and sheep shearing, to cookery and performing arts.
Whilst many of the clubs 40 active members are involved in farming, Stone Young Farmers welcomes young people from all backgrounds.
David Benbow, joint chairman of Stone Young Farmers, said: “We are so grateful for Stoford’s generous donation. Our old rig has served us well for many years, but this will allow us to build a new structure that we can transport from one site to another.
“Stone Young Farmers is led by young people, for young people and is all about having fun and taking part, no matter the outcome. You don’t need to be involved in farming to be a Young Farmer – just someone who appreciates the countryside and enjoys rural life. We are a young club and are always looking for more people to come and join us.”
