Stone Dominoes came away with the points on Saturday in a game that ended prematurely with just under 10 minutes remaining in dramatic circumstances.
Redgate had taken the lead through a Scott O’Brien strike midway through the first half, Dominoes responding with two quick-fire goals in the following six minutes to turn the game around – a rare Ryan Parkes goal and debutant Matt Barlow from the penalty spot.
A second-half own goal from Redgate’s Ross Harrison had increased the visitors’ lead, before a late challenge on Dominoes’ Haroon Mahmood caused chaotic scenes between both sets of players and substitutes. Two home players saw red along with Mahmood, before the referee declared the game could not be continued.
With 82 minutes on the clock the game was thrown into chaos. An extremely late challenge on Mahmood incensed the Stone fullback, with the home players taking a dislike to his reaction. All 22 players were to become involved in the handbags that followed, with substitutes from both sides joining the fracas. As the situation calmed, and following a lengthy discussion with his assistants, the referee produced the red card for Mahmood, along with Redgate’s Mark James and Scott O’Brien.
More surprising, though, was what came next, as the official then indicated that he felt the game could not continue for the minutes that remained, taking the decision to abandon the game and call a halt to the afternoon’s proceedings.
It is unclear what the final outcome will be in terms of the result and consequences, with the immediate result standing for now, but one would think the result will stand with so little time left on the clock and Dominoes leading 3-1.
Dominoes climb to fourth place in the league following the victory, as they take another two-week break from the league, starting with a Leek Cup tie on Saturday 17th October at home to Leek CSOB Reserves (1.30pm kick-off).
