We may still be in the depths of winter but Stone Choral Society are already getting ready for spring with a new musical director. The society’s next concert in the town is called ‘Rejoice – it’s spring’ and will feature two pieces with an emphasis on Africa.
Bob Chilcott’s The making of the drum, which was inspired by a visit to Uganda, and Paul Basler’s Missa Kenya, written when Paul Basler was a visiting university lecturer in Nairobi, both feature an exciting fusion of traditional choral and African music.
The choral society will also be performing Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice In The Lamb. The main theme of this work is the worship of God by all created beings and things, each in his own way.
The choir will be conducted by new musical director Harriet Johnson. After 10 years performing, conducting and lecturing in Yorkshire, she has returned to Staffordshire, her home county.
The concert takes place on Saturday 23rd March in Christ Church at 7.30pm. You can get your tickets now (priced £10 / £8 concessions) from Wikijum and Plants the Jewellers in the High Street. Children are free, by the way. Alternatively, email tickets@stonechoral.org.uk
There’s lots more information about Stone Choral Society at www.stonechoral.org.uk, including a lovely biography of musical director Harriet Johnson.
