Stone Town Council is looking to shelve its current craft and collectibles market and create a new one on a different date in the month.
The council’s services sub-committee is looking at moving the market from the second Saturday of each month to the third, to get more stallholders involved and to increase the number of people visiting.
The issue was discussed at the council’s general purposes committee on 6th November. Committee chairman and council leader Philip Jones read an email from Stone Food and Drink Festival chairman Richard Stevens, who said a new market in Stone should not compete with the hugely successful farmers’ market that is held on the first Saturday of each month.
Members of the general purposes committee agreed, and called on the services sub-committee to make sure that their plans for the new market focused on crafts, antiques and collectibles.
Cllr Jill Hood said: “We need to agree a budget to promote the third Saturday of the month as a quality market, but make sure it’s not in competition with the farmers’ market.”
The services sub-committee will next discuss the issue at their meeting on 18th December.
